Shifting from linear to circular economy

One of the most demanding commitment for Flos is the transition from a linear to a circular economy model, aiming at decoupling economic growth from the consumption of finite resources.

For this purpose the Company accurately monitors the amount of materials and components purchased to produce its lighting systems, as well as the related waste production, and is committed to reduce the use of non-recyclable or toxic materials.

 

These are some of the most recent outcomes.

>  The percentage of recycled waste over the total waste produced rose from 55% in 2018 to 80% in 2020.

>  In the Bovezzo plant a container divided in three parts to separately collect iron, brass and aluminium waste has been installed.

>  The Bernareggio plant (Ares) purchases chemical compounds for painting and coating activities. In 2020 these compounds, that include paints, artificial resins and silicones, amounted to 14 tons, showing a 7 % decrease in terms of items purchased if compared with 2018, given the same production capacity.

> The Company reviewed its suppliers list to select the best providers ensuring the correct disposal and recycling of waste produced.

>  Flos fosters a circular way of thinking and behaving among its employees through, for instance, the improvement of the recycling processes in coffee areas.

Making packaging entirely sustainable

Flos’ objective is to reduce the amount of packaging materials and to improve their recyclability, while ensuring an adequate protective barrier during transportation.

In this direction Flos has continued the progressive replacement of non-recyclable polyurethane foams with cardboard boxes, specifically developed to deliver the same protection standards.

 

> The project allowed Flos to record a significant 69% decrease in the purchase of polyurethane foams in 2020 compared to 2013, the year the project was launched.

> In 2020 the Company has reached 80% of recyclable packaging materials in its four plants.

> Within 2023 the packaging system will be almost entirely derived from recyclable raw materials.

Reducing the carbon footprint

The lighting industry is called upon to progressively reduce its overall environmental impact. Flos Group has already been aswering. As the first and crucial step, the company keeps on monitoring the direct and indirect Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions along the whole value chain. This is the basis to calculate the company impact and to opt for the most relevant actions to mitigate its carbon footprint. The Group has undertaken the reduction of its GHG emissions by 27.5% by 2030.

For this purpose and as a transition tool, since 2020 Flos Group has purchased carbon credits in order to compensate its GHG direct and indirect (energy market based) emissions – which correspond to Scope 1 and market-based Scope 2 emissions as estabilished by the internationally recognized GHG Protocol. The credits allow Flos Group to achieve the carbon neutrality level.

The credits come from nature-based projects that produce a positive impact, such as the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project in Canadian British Columbia and the Guatemalan Conservation Coast Project. The first one supports changes in managing the territories involved in the protection of the forests on the pacific coast where wolves and Grizzly bears live. The second one, on the Guatemalan Caribbean coastline, works to protect the remaining forests of the region from deforestation. The project area hosts over 400 species of birds.
